We created this website for the Dow family to better understand
their history and heritage!!! We have just barely touched the surface and will be going forward with this ambitious endeavour!!
Arabella Bayley was my father, Levi Paul Dow's, grandmother. Her great-great grandfather was General Jacob Bayley(July
19, 1726-March 1, 1815) He has an incredible resume:
- Appointed General during the Revolutionary War by George Washington
- Spent approximately $60,000 of his own money to fund the cause and never was compensated by Congress-causing him to die penniless
- During the siege of Fort William Henry, his company comprised a portion of the garrison and he escaped from the massacre
which followed its surrender, August 7, 1757, by running twelve miles to Fort Edward, outstripping his Indian pursuers.
- A price was set by Canada and the tories on the general's and two of his son's heads-a kidnapping attempt was made-but
failed due to a spy's confession of the plot before he was put to death.
- A staunch patriot who bitterly opposed the "Haldimand Treaty" carried on with Canada by Ethan and Ira Allen.
- Representative to New York Congress in 1775
We hope to update this page often with new photos.
